Everything about Halkidiki seems to be an open invitation for family fun, relaxation, and adventure!

Things to do with kids in Halkidiki

  1. Play on any of the beautiful beaches that make up the 500km coastline.
  2. Take a boat out onto the Aegean for fishing, snorkeling, or go around the secluded Mount Athos. Renting a boat out for a day allows you to visit small traditional fishing villages. There you can enjoy their carefree and traditional lifestyle.
  3. For resort entertainment, stick to Kassandra, the most cosmopolitan of the peninsulas.
  4. For those interested in ancient Greece’s history, visit the ancient ruins in Sithonia.

What to eat in Halkidiki

Halkidiki offers a very similar cuisine to Greece’s food with simple seasonings, fresh meat, or seafood and vegetables. Typical dishes and ingredients include fried meatballs, squash balls, octopus, shrimp, squid, cheese, olives, stuffed vine leaves, tzatziki, aubergine dip, small sausages, and giant beans.

For lunch: head to restaurants or bistros called mezedes or mezedopolio

For dinner: head to tavernas that serve specialties such as moussaka, kebabs, pastitsio (lamb or goat with macaroni and tomatoes), stifado (braised beef with onions), and paidakia (grilled lamb or goat chops).

Halkidiki has its fair share of international food, mainly around the main resorts and larger hotels. Still, family holidays are much more fun when you go for the full-on Greek experience.
